Day 1-4
Drango / Chokri / Ganzi
Commence your adventure with an international flight to Chengdu, where our guide will warmly welcome you and accompany you to a downtown hotel. Chengdu, renowned as the home of China's beloved pandas, seamlessly blends modernity with rich traditional culture. Take some leisure time to explore the city and savor the distinctive flavors of local Sichuan cuisine.
Our journey leads us through the dramatic landscapes on the fringes of the Tibetan Plateau, a land of rugged mountains and untamed beauty. Along this captivating route, we'll have the privilege of visiting a Panda breeding center, a sanctuary for these endangered creatures where you can observe them in a carefully crafted environment. As we pass through the Balang Tunnel, be prepared to be spellbound by the majestic panorama of snow-clad peaks that surround us.
Arriving at Danpa, we'll immerse ourselves in the authentic local way of life by exploring villages and experiencing the rich tapestry of Tibetan rural culture. For our evening's rest, we'll find warm hospitality at a family guesthouse nestled in the enchanting Dronglu village, perched at an elevation of 2250 meters. This region is renowned for its ancient Tibetan villages, graced with towering watchtowers and fortress-like houses that cling to steep mountainsides. These age-old stone watchtowers, constructed more than half a millennium ago, served both as protective bastions and symbols of a family's exalted status. Get ready for an unforgettable hike through this historic village, venture to climb an ancient tower in a neighboring settlement and prepare to be enthralled by the breathtaking vistas and cultural treasures that await.
Day 5-8
Drango, Chokri, Ganze
Our journey continues as we ascend along the riverside to the Tongu La pass (3,840m), revealing a breathtaking panoramic view of Mt. Zhira Lhatse. Beyond, we are greeted by the open expanse of highland grasslands and open view. Our first stop is the Gather monastery, an ancient 18th-century sanctuary founded by the Seventh Dalai Lama. The drive takes us through moderate mountain passes, winding past idyllic villages adorned with traditional white houses and vibrant red lacquer doors. We'll spend a night in Drango, visiting Chokri monastery, wandering its tranquil environs, and exploring the surrounding landscape at our own pace. In the afternoon, we embark on a picturesque hike along a nearby mountain path, offering sweeping views of the valley adorned with barley fields and villages along the riverbanks. Our walk leads us to Kasar Lake, where we'll visit a local nunnery, home to around two hundred dedicated nuns pursuing their studies.
Continuing our journey, we drive to Ganze, where a breathtaking view of mountain clusters unfolds as we ascend to a pass of 4,990 meters. Ganzi is a vibrant town bustling with shops and vendors lining the streets. Here, you'll have the opportunity to encounter the Khampa people, distinguished by their striking red-tasseled headdresses. Our exploration includes a visit to a nunnery above the town and a leisurely walk to the Ganze monasteries. In this sacred place, we'll witness the inner sanctuary of the temple adorned with a collection of ancient frescoes and observe the monks quietly chanting in the prayer room. Our immersion in Tibetan monastic life continues as we visit temples and engage in discussions with monks. This leg of the journey promises an enriching experience in the heart of Tibet's cultural and spiritual traditions.
Day 9-12
Derge /Palyul / Ganzi
Our journey carries us through the stunning Yi Chu river valley, where picturesque barley fields and ancient villages line the path. Continuing on, we venture into nomadic territory, where yaks and herds graze freely on the vast highland pastures. Our first stop is the breathtaking Yullung Lhatso lake, a hidden turquoise gem cradled beneath the colossal glaciers of Mt. Trola. Here, we take the opportunity to hike uphill, gaining a spectacular vantage point for some truly awe-inspiring views.
Our route leads us through a recently constructed tunnel, ushering us into the historic capital of the Derge kingdom, which is often considered the heart of the Kham region. Nestled along the meandering Yangtze River, this area is home to some of eastern Tibet's oldest monasteries, including the magnificent Palpung Monastery, which ranks as the second-largest ancient building on the Tibetan Plateau, second only to Lhasa's iconic Potala Palace.
An exciting day awaits us as we delve into the upper Dophu Valley, where a meandering river winds through lush meadows set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. For those eager for even more breathtaking vistas, we'll venture up one of the side valleys, offering panoramic views of Dophu Ngatra, the second-highest peak of the Trola range.
Our journey continues with another exhilarating mountain hike, beginning at the monastery and leading us to the sacred Pema Shelpuk cave. This revered pilgrimage site and meditation retreat have played a vital role in the spiritual journeys of successive teachers from Dzongsar Monastery. Adventurous souls may opt to ascend to Dzonka La (4,790m), a vantage point offering captivating mountain panoramas, including the sacred Dorgya Melong (5,655m).
Lastly, we embark on an excursion to Palyul and Yarchen Gar Monastery, both steeped in a rich historical tapestry and brimming with the profound Buddhist culture and spiritual heritage that characterize this captivating region.
Day 13-14
Lhagang/Chengdu
On our return journey to Chengdu, we'll make a memorable stop at Lhagang. Here, we'll visit Lhagang Monastery, home to a sacred Buddha statue with deep historical significance. Afterward, we'll take a leisurely stroll through the enchanting Tagong grasslands, where the vast expanse seems to stretch endlessly below the backdrop of the snow-capped Mt. Yara Lhatse. Our overnight stay will be in a charming Tibetan lodge.
If the weather is in our favor, we'll have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Minya Konka, the highest peak in eastern Tibet, soaring to a majestic 7,757 meters. Our road descends via a series of winding switchbacks to Kangding before ascending into the foothills of the Hengduan Shan mountains. Finally, we'll reach the lowland plains of Sichuan and ends tour in Chengdu.
