Before venturing into the vast Silk Road desert, our journey takes us to the heartland of Amdo Tibet, where we'll immerse ourselves in traditional Tibetan culture that has left an indelible mark on the western Yellow River corridor, a vital part of China's Silk Road.
Our first destination is the Binlingsi Grottoes, a living testament to a history that spans over 1,600 years. Tucked away within the deep canyons of the Yellow River, these caves are adorned with hundreds of clay statues and murals, clinging to the cliffsides. These ancient artworks offer a captivating window into the rich heritage of this region.
Our journey continues to the Labrang Monastery, a masterfully designed Buddhist center that ranks among the most significant in Amdo Tibet. This bustling hub of Buddhist learning resembles a vibrant university. As we venture further, we traverse the highland pastures inhabited by nomadic Tibetans. Along the way, yaks and sheep graze peacefully, providing a firsthand look at the traditional nomadic way of life.
Our exploration leads us to Rongwu Monastery in Rebgong, renowned for its exquisite frescoes and woodwork. These treasures showcase the exceptional skills of local traditional artists. You'll even have the chance to engage with and observe these talented Tibetan painters in the charming village.
As our time in Qinghai draws to a close, we head to the shores of Kokonor Lake, aptly known as the "blue lake." This tranquil gem, often described as a turquoise jewel, nestles gracefully on the northeastern Tibetan plateau, offering a stunning and picturesque finale to our Amdo Tibet adventure.
Day 5-12
Zhangye / Alax Youqi / Zhangye
The Gansu corridor is a vital segment of the Silk Road, tracing the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. This extraordinary route unfolds between the majestic Qilian Shan mountain range and the arid Mogilian Gobi desert. Prepare for a mesmerizing transformation of landscapes as you travel along this historic path. Your visual journey will transition from vast fields of golden canola flowers to verdant green grasslands, culminating in the oasis town of Zhangye.
From there, our adventure leads us deep into the heart of the Badain Jaran Desert, where we embark on an exhilarating off-road expedition. As our caravan sets off, camels are carefully loaded, and you'll quickly adapt to walking on the sand, gracefully navigating the expansive dunes. The landscape unfolds with smaller and larger sand dunes, each one offering a new opportunity for exploration and awe-inspiring photography. Evenings will be spent in tents, ensuring an unforgettable desert experience under the starlit sky.
As our desert odyssey reaches its conclusion, we'll make our way back to Alxa Youqi via all-terrain jeeps, reflecting on the incredible landscapes and adventures that have defined this remarkable journey.
Day 13-15
Our journey takes us to the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha Monastery, a repository of cultural and spiritual significance. Within its sacred halls, you'll encounter the largest indoor reclining Buddha statue, an impressive figure stretching 34 meters in length. This magnificent Buddha is surrounded by eighteen sculptures of bodhisattvas, creating a profoundly spiritual atmosphere. Dafosi Monastery, founded in 1098 by a Tangut monk, boasts a rich history. Legend has it that even the renowned explorer Marco Polo spent two years here, captivated by the temple's wisdom contained within its ancient scriptures.
Our path leads us through the Gobi desert and a series of oasis towns, eventually arriving at Jiayuguan. We commence our exploration by visiting Jiayuguan Pass, a section of the Great Wall that marks the western starting point of the Ming Dynasty's construction efforts (1368-1644). Continuing our journey, we traverse the breathtaking Gobi desert wilderness en route to Dunhuang. Here, we delve into the UNESCO-protected Mogao Grottoes, a testament to ancient Buddhist art. These caves house some of the finest murals and statues spanning a millennium, earning them the name "Caves of the Thousand Buddhas." They stand as a religious and cultural crossroads along the Silk Road.
We also visit to Mingshashan, the "singing sand dunes" Marco Polo once described. Here, we explore the vast natural beauty of the Gobi desert by camel, eventually discovering Crescent Lake. Nestled among towering sand dunes, this remarkable oasis has sustained life in the region for countless millennia, providing a striking contrast to the arid desert surroundings.
